Here’s where I’m going, the island of Gasparee off the coast of mainland Trinidad. It’s one of the best places on earth!!

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.”

A Trini Poem for You by Author Unknown
This poem’s pretty long for my standards, but it’s damn good one. I had gotten it in a chain email from both my dad and my uncle.
Trinidadians are a special people of dat there is no doubt,
Doh care what odders say of how dey run dey mouth.
But of all de special talents dat we Trinis possess,
Is de way we talk dat ranks us among de best.
At de street corners, in de shop or at work on any given day,
Is to hear us speak and carry on in our own special way.
De colourful words, de antics and de accent all combine,
To create a whole language dat has stood de test of time.
De way we express ourselves and de way we converse,
Is truly an art of which every Trini can boast.
Look at de many words dat we Trinis create,
Just to make it easier for us to communicate.

The Tobago Culinary Festival 2013
(Follow our blogs HERE & HERE)
The Tobago Culinary Festival, where Tobago’s leading chefs showcase their talent, will be held once again at the Pigeon Point Heritage Park on June 23, 2013. The gates open at 10:00am and admission is free. Food goes on sale from 11:00am.
The event, hosted by the Division of Tourism and Transportation of the Tobago House of Assembly, will feature food, fine wine and an opportunity for the island’s best chefs and cooks to showcase their talent. The beachside event has morphed from several local cooks showcasing at Mt Irvine Beach to a headliner item on T&T’s event calendar. Designed to highlight the many reasons why Tobago remains one of the Caribbean’s most versatile culinary destinations, the festival also features chefs from restaurants and hotels across the island.
Patrons will be able to indulge in delicious cuisine while simultaneously witnessing various skills contests. Local chefs will once again face off in the Mystery Basket and Iron Chef competitions. Secondary school students will also test their skills and display their talents in the culinary arts; and bartenders will attempt to wow the crowd with their colorful concoctions and mixing skills in the much-anticipated mixology contest. This year a wine zone will feature both local and international wines. Connoisseurs can sample some of their favourites and indulge in tastings offered by popular wine distributors.
The festival remains one of the many initiatives through which the Tobago House of Assembly increases the island’s visibility in the local, regional and international tourism market. The annual festival helps to promote destination Tobago, stimulate economic activity within the tourism business unit and showcase to the world the island’s most delectable signature delicacies.

I left my house today, for art’s sake of course. Brianna McCarthy’s solo exhibition, Saints and Jumbies, has been extended until tomorrow (15.06.13) at Medulla Art Gallery. This was just what I needed.
